Summary
  • Chevrolet confirmed a C8 Grand Sport at Sebring with a new GM V8 technology
  • Roger Penske attended and referenced his 1964 C2 Grand Sport class victory
  • Prototype was spotted in Admiral Blue with white stripe and red decals
  • CorvetteBlogger listed possible 6.7 liter V8 and a hybrid Grand Sport X variant

Chevrolet confirmed that the c8 corvette grand sport will join the mid engine lineup, announcing the model at the 74th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The automaker said the 2027 Grand Sport is being developed by and for enthusiasts and will join the C8 family as a distinct trim.

The announcement took place during a Sebring presentation that included Roger Penske, who served as the event Grand Marshall. Penske recalled his earlier racing role and noted that he and co driver Jim Hall drove one of the original five C2 Grand Sports to a class victory at the Sebring track on March 21, 1964, a tie back the automaker highlighted during the reveal.

Chevrolet said the new Grand Sport will feature the next generation of GM V8 technology, but the company held full specifications, pricing and uncamouflaged photos until the official global reveal on March 26. The automaker described the car as a high volume model, suggesting wider availability than limited run variants such as the Z06, and Chevrolet said final horsepower and detailed specs will be released at the cover reveal.

Spotted Prototype And Powertrain Speculation

A prototype surfaced at Sebring for a parade lap that included earlier Grand Sport generations, and the car matched a recent photoshoot, according to CorvetteBlogger. The spotted example wore an Admiral Blue livery with a white racing stripe, red rear fender decals, black wheels and red brake calipers, closely mirroring the earlier images published during the shoot.

CorvetteBlogger reported the C8 Grand Sport is expected to debut sometime next year and that Chevrolet will position the model below the ZR1 and ZR1X in the lineup. The site said the Grand Sport aims to deliver a strong performance value in a more affordable package compared with the highest performance variants.

On powertrains, the articles gave differing hints. Chevrolet described a next generation GM V8 but did not name displacement, leaving open whether engineers would modify the Stingray 6.2 liter LT2, detune the Z06 flat plane crank LT6, or introduce another architecture. CorvetteBlogger added that the Grand Sport could use a new 6.7 liter V8 producing about 550 horsepower, and that a Grand Sport X variant might pair that V8 with a front mounted electric motor to yield roughly 720 horsepower.
