U.S. flight cancellations and delays are affecting a broad swath of the national network, with a live tracker showing 6,795 total delays and 985 total cancellations today, and 613 delays and 92 cancellations involving flights within, into, or out of the US, as reported by a live Airline Flight Cancellations Info & Statistics feed.
Separately, US News reported 135 cancellations and nearly 1,910 delays so far on the same day, and it identified eight busy airport systems reporting elevated disruption levels. The airports include Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Boston Logan, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston George Bush Intercontinental, Houston William P. Hobby, Los Angeles International, and the three major New York area airports.
Major network carriers and low-cost operators alike are feeling the impact, with clusters of late flights reported at Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines hubs, US News said. Low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers such as Spirit and JetBlue are also caught up, particularly on busy leisure routes, according to that report.
Industry sources cited by US News said the current disruptions reflect a mix of unsettled weather requiring increased aircraft separation, deep-rooted airport congestion, and persistent staffing and equipment pressures at airlines and air traffic control. The report also noted that industry data from 2024 and early 2025 placed US on-time arrival rates in the upper seventies, leaving little operational cushion when problems arise.
Passenger Protections And Airline Commitments
The U.S. Department of Transportation offers an Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard that summarizes what amenities airlines commit to provide for controllable cancellations and delays. The dashboard uses a green check mark when an airline has committed to provide a given service and a red x when it has not, the DOT says.
The DOT explains controllable cancellations or delays as those caused by the airline, with examples including maintenance or crew problems, cabin cleaning, baggage loading, and fueling. The agency says airlines must follow commitments in their customer service plans and that the Department will hold airlines accountable for failures to meet those promises.
The DOT also says airlines must provide prompt refunds to ticketed passengers if a flight is canceled or significantly changed, regardless of reason, when a passenger chooses not to accept an alternative. Passengers who cannot obtain an entitled refund may file a complaint with the Department, and the DOT provides additional guidance for passengers with disabilities and for common delay scenarios, including creeping delays.
For flights scheduled to depart within seven days, the DOT requires airlines to provide status updates within 30 minutes after becoming aware of a status change, and to update airport displays and other airline-controlled sources within the same timeframe, the Department notes.
