Stock Market Open Presidents Day is closed for the federal holiday, with the New York Stock Exchange listing "Washington's Birthday" among observed holidays and trading set to resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Presidents Day falls on Monday, Feb. 16 this year, and the day honors the birthday of the nation’s first president, George Washington, although it is commonly called Presidents Day.
Most banks will be closed because the holiday is observed by the Federal Reserve, but customers can still complete some transactions using online banking, according to the personal finance website Bankrate.
The U.S. Postal Service will halt mail delivery and close retail locations on Monday in observance of the holiday, and the agency said customers can still access some services and products through its website and certain self-service kiosks.
UPS and FedEx will make deliveries on Presidents Day, although FedEx notes there may be early on-call pickups and drop box pickups, including drop box closures, in some areas.
Retail, Food Service, And Other Openings
Many retailers and pharmacies will remain open. Target confirmed with CBS News that it will operate during regular hours, and CVS Pharmacy locations will be open, according to a company spokesperson.
Major grocery chains will be open on Presidents Day, with Aldi, Food Lion, Giant Food, Trader Joe's and Wegmans listed as operating on Monday.
Most fast-food chains will welcome customers on the holiday. That group includes Burger King, Dunkin', Chick-fil-A, IHOP, Taco Bell and Subway, though restaurant chains advise checking local hours because they can vary by location.
The holiday is one of 12 federal holidays, and its federal recognition explains the closures for banks, postal operations, and the stock market, while many private businesses and delivery carriers maintain service with some exceptions.
