Summary
  • Riot will end active 2XKO development and ship a final bug patch in December
  • Riot cited flat engagement and costs exceeding revenue as the main reasons
  • All purchases on or before Aug. 20 will be refunded to players
  • Lux and Samira will still arrive before active development ends

Riot Games said it will end active development of 2XKO and deliver a final bug patch in December, after concluding the fighting game was not trending toward sustainability. The developer announced the decision on its official website, saying engagement and financial metrics failed to improve despite major updates.

Riot said it had closely monitored revenue, retention, new players and engagement and saw no meaningful, sustained change in the game's trajectory. The company added that 2XKO costs substantially more to operate than it brings in, and that it would have continued development if it had seen a viable future.

The studio plans to finish work-in-progress content through the rest of the year and will introduce two final champions and feature improvements before ending active development. Riot will end sales of KO Points and unlock all champions for players.

Riot confirmed 2XKO will remain playable beyond 2026 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X, and that servers will stay on to support online play for the foreseeable future. Offline play will be unaffected, and the company promised to give advanced notice if that status changes.

Refunds Details And Upcoming Content

Riot said it will refund all 2XKO purchases made on or before Aug. 20. For PC players, KO Points and Starter Edition purchases will be refunded to the original payment method, with most refunds distributed in the next two weeks and PC refunds expected to finish by November 2026.

For PlayStation and Xbox players, refunds will be processed through the platform providers, and Riot warned that PlayStation or Xbox customer support may contact players to confirm payment details. Riot also said it will unlock all champions and stop KO Points sales.

The company reiterated content plans announced at Evo 2026, where it introduced two more characters and where 2XKO ranked as the event's third-most popular game behind Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. Riot will add Lux in September with patch 1.3.1 and Samira in October, and the studio said 2XKO will ultimately feature 17 playable characters when active development ends.

Riot released 2XKO after nearly a decade of development, positioning it as a 2v2 tag fighting game built around a subset of League of Legends champions. The studio said the decision reflects measured business and engagement outcomes rather than a lack of effort on the project.
