Tesla Autopilot, the automaker’s suite of driver assistance features classified as SAE Level 2, has advanced into wider commercial use and regulatory review. The US safety regulator said recent Model Y cars met a new benchmark for advanced driver assistance systems, and Tesla reported that vehicles have logged billions of miles using its Full Self-Driving supervised software.

The company now offers FSD as a subscription only, and it has rolled out iterative software updates across multiple hardware platforms branded HW3 and HW4. Tesla has also begun limited Robotaxi operations in several US cities using production cars, while saying upgrades or trade offers will be available for owners whose hardware cannot run future software, according to company statements and comments by Elon Musk.

Tesla has moved its approach from radar and ultrasonic sensors toward camera-only vision in many vehicles and has developed in-house compute, including an AI training cluster known as Dojo and custom chips. The firm says its neural networks train on data from millions of drivers and billions of miles of driving to improve urban and highway navigation.

Regulatory, Legal, and Safety Fallout

Federal regulators and safety groups have repeatedly questioned the readiness and marketing of these driver assistance systems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted multi-year probes that found the system contributed to hundreds of collisions and numerous fatalities, and it pressed Tesla to change driver monitoring and Autosteer controls. The agency said the system’s degradation detection can fail in low-visibility conditions, delaying alerts to drivers until just before a crash.

Tesla has issued several recalls and over-the-air fixes to address issues flagged by regulators. One recall covered roughly 362,000 vehicles running FSD beta and another covered about 2.03 million vehicles equipped with Autosteer, according to agency filings. The company also conducted voluntary updates to remove contentious behaviors and to add stronger driver prompts.

Courts and prosecutors have tested Tesla’s claims. Consumer and government agencies have accused the company of overstating autonomy, and a federal jury found Tesla partially liable in a fatal crash, awarding $243 million in damages. The Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission have opened investigations into statements about Autopilot and FSD, while state regulators have lodged complaints over advertising.

Industry experts remain divided on Tesla’s camera-first strategy. Some peer companies and analysts favor lidar and high definition maps, arguing those tools reduce blind spots that a camera-only approach can miss. European regulators have begun a provisional approval path in one member state, which several other countries have recognized, but larger EU markets continue to weigh broader authorization amid safety concerns.
