mcdonald's menu is being tested with new protein rich items as McDonald’s seeks to appeal to customers taking GLP 1 medications, Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said during an earnings call, as reported by Benzinga.
Kempczinski said on the call that as adoption of these medications grows, consumers’ behavior changes, noting they tend to choose more protein rich and lower calorie meals and reduce snacking and sugary drinks, as reported by Benzinga.
McDonald’s already offers several high protein choices, including Snack Wraps, Sausage Biscuit sandwiches and McCrispy Strips, and Vice President Jill McDonald confirmed the company has long term goals to serve customers using these drugs but did not provide further details.
Industry Moves And Broader Trend
The move follows a wider shift among fast food chains to redesign menus for customers using GLP 1 medications, with Smoothie King introducing a GLP 1 menu in 2024 that features added protein and fiber and zero grams of added sugar.
Other chains have taken similar steps, with Olive Garden adding a lighter portion section, Chipotle launching a protein cup that the chain says provides 32 grams of protein, Subway adding Protein Pockets with over 20 grams of protein, and Shake Shack offering a Good Fit Menu with lettuce wraps instead of buns.
GLP 1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy have become popular weight loss tools because they suppress appetite and slow digestion, helping many people lose stubborn weight, the report said.
Use of these medications has risen sharply, with a November poll showing 12 percent of Americans reported taking a GLP 1 drug, double the amount compared to last May, as reported by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The Independent has contacted McDonald’s for more information about its testing and long term plans, according to the report.
