Labor Day weekend combined heavy consumer discounts with a sharp rise in travel costs, according to two separate industry roundups published by CNN Underscored and AAA.
CNN Underscored editors Rikka Altland and Jacqueline Saguin compiled an extensive Labor Day shopping roundup after scouring scores of retailers for standout offers. The team highlighted discounts across tech, home, outdoors and apparel, and listed leading retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, REI, Wayfair, Lowe’s and The Home Depot as participating in sales.
Editors flagged several notable price cuts. Bluetooth trackers fell to new lows with the improved AirTag 2 at $24. True wireless earbuds like the AirPods Pro 3 were marked down by about $50. Kitchen and home offers included HexClad nonstick cookware at roughly 35 percent off and Thermapen One thermometers at 20 percent off. Sleep and bedding deals included the Casper Snow queen mattress marked down to $1,900 and Naturepedic Eos savings to $3,039.
Outdoor and power bargains also appeared. A rolling Yeti cooler showed a $75 reduction on select colors. Bluetti portable power stations were at least $275 off, and the Aventon Soltera e-bike carried a $200 discount. Home cleaning and air-quality products joined the sales, with Miele vacuums and the new Qrevo S Pro robot vacuum each heavily discounted, and Sans air purifiers offered at 25 percent off through Sept. 9.
CNN Underscored advised readers that the best prices often arrive before the holiday and may sell out quickly, urging buyers to act when editors identify all-time lows. The outlet’s roundup, published Sept. 7, 2026, emphasized that deals began earlier in the season and covered a wide range of categories.
Gas Prices Raise Travel Costs and Pressure Pump Prices
At the same time, drivers faced unusually high fuel costs over the holiday. AAA reported the national average for regular unleaded at $4.15 per gallon on Monday, a record high for Labor Day and a step above the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 set on Sept. 3, 2012.
Prices remain down from a 2026 peak of $4.56 in May but stand about 30 percent higher than the $3.20 average a year earlier, AAA said. Diesel also surged to $5.90 per gallon from $3.71 a year ago. Hertz noted that Labor Day is among the busiest travel weekends, increasing exposure to higher pump prices for road trip drivers.
Analysts linked the rise to elevated crude costs and supply disruptions. Brittany Moye, a AAA spokesperson, said elevated crude oil costs have offset the typical post-summer decline in demand. West Texas Intermediate futures traded near $92 per barrel and Brent near $97, compared with roughly $67 and $72 before the Iran War began on Feb. 28, the reports said.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz fell to an estimated 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter, down from 21.6 million barrels per day in the last quarter of 2025. U.S. gasoline inventories were about 6 percent below average for the week ending Aug. 28, the EIA said.
Industry observers noted a potential short-term easing. Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, said, "The good news for consumers is that the industry transitions [in September] to winter-grade gas, which will provide some measure of relief at the pump." Regulators also allowed winter-blend gasoline sales to start earlier, on Sept. 1, in an effort to boost supply.
