A sudden glacier collapse high on Langtang Lirung unleashed an ice and rock avalanche that turned into a fast moving flood and mudflow downriver toward the Nepal China border. The United States Geological Survey said seismic signals associated with the event were consistent with a glacial collapse rather than a tectonic earthquake. German researchers at the GFZ recorded a strong landslide signal that matched the USGS timing.
Satellite imagery and seismology indicate a large section of glacier and bedrock fell more than a kilometre in vertical drop and moved tens of kilometres down valley. Analysts estimate the detached mass measured on the order of 100 to 200 million cubic metres. Imagery also showed the glacier had been shifting at about 10 millimetres per month earlier in the year and accelerated in the weeks before the collapse.
The collapse generated barrier lakes and a debris flow that overwhelmed valleys within minutes. Surveillance video captured floodwaters smashing the Gyirong Port border complex shortly after seismic waves were recorded. Authorities reported bodies and wreckage carried far downstream; officials said some remains were found hundreds of kilometres away. Hydrologic analysis estimated debris velocities around 50 metres per second in places.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported at least 1,259 people dead and 5,083 missing in Nepal, while Chinese state media gave figures of 21 dead and 541 missing in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Earlier media reporting and the AP described mass burials in Kathmandu because many bodies could not be identified immediately.
Secondary Impacts And International Response
The floods devastated infrastructure and power projects along the Trishuli river system. Nepalese authorities said multiple hydropower plants were damaged, removing hundreds of megawatts from the grid and leaving projects under construction wrecked. Officials reported about 900 hydropower workers were missing, with hundreds believed trapped in tunnels at several sites.
The government placed preliminary direct damages in the hundreds of billions of rupees and warned reconstruction could cost many times that amount. Roads, bridges and monitoring stations were swept away, and local early warning systems proved unable to detect this type of high altitude glacier failure. Experts noted systems had been optimised for monsoon floods and were blind to a rapid glacier collapse that sent water and debris downstream within minutes.
Rescue operations mobilised thousands of security personnel and hundreds of international specialists. Nepalese forces and foreign experts worked on tunnel rescues, DNA identification of corpses and clearing debris. China flew relief supplies and forensic teams into Kathmandu and the border zone, and the United Nations, the European Union and other countries pledged humanitarian funding. Observers said restrictions on reporting in Tibet complicated efforts to fully assess damage and casualties on the Chinese side.
