A powerful Super El Niño 2026 is emerging and appears likely to become the dominant global weather driver this fall and winter, according to ensemble model guidance and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Recent ocean analyses show strong warm anomalies across the equatorial Pacific, with peak departures in the eastern basin of roughly three to four degrees above normal, and model means projecting seasonal values well above the Super El Niño threshold.

Seasonal forecasts from ECMWF and the North American Multi Model Ensemble already depict a winter like pressure pattern forming, with high pressure over Canada, a Pacific low, and a pronounced southern storm track across the United States.

Those pressure features translate to warmer conditions over Canada and the northern US in the models, while precipitation guidance highlights enhanced rainfall for the southern and central United States and increased moisture along parts of the West Coast.

Impacts Risks And Regional Responses

Coastal communities face elevated flood risk as ECMWF based model runs assign a high probability of above average rainfall along the California coast, presenters said at a state town hall.

UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain cautioned that El Niño does not guarantee any single outcome but said it shifts the odds toward a wetter winter and increases the likelihood of coastal flooding during strong storms and king tide events.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography researcher Mark Merrifield pointed to past damaging El Niños and said the event exposes vulnerabilities along the coast, offering a stress test of preparedness under changing conditions.

Scientists also warned that a strong El Niño may not erase drought in the US southwest, with Joel Lisonbee saying conditions would have to be exceptionally wet to do so, while NOAA records link El Niño to higher flood and severe weather odds across the Gulf and eastern seaboard.

The forecast guidance also flags a secondary atmospheric risk. Model analysis indicates El Niño increases the chance of stratospheric warming events and polar vortex disruption, which can weaken polar circulation and allow cold air intrusions that, when combined with an active southern jet, raise the potential for strong winter storms and sharper temperature contrasts.
