Summary
  • Bill Gates called A.I. the most dangerous technology in a CNN interview
  • Gates seeks a meeting with President Trump and has spoken with politicians
  • He urged regulation, taxation of A.I. and protections for some jobs
  • A former Anthropic employee warned of a 10% extinction risk, as reported by TMZ

Bill Gates used a televised interview to sound a stark warning about artificial intelligence and to press for urgent political attention. He told CNN host Jake Tapper that A.I. is "the most dangerous technology humans ever invented." Gates said fears that A.I. might wipe out humanity can be overblown, but he argued the risks are real and require oversight rather than leaving regulation to industry alone.

Gates told Tapper he has already spoken with several politicians and wants a chance to meet with President Trump and his team. He said it would be a mistake to treat A.I. differently from other dangerous technologies, noting that cars, planes and medicines are subject to regulation and asking why A.I. should receive a free pass.

In a separate appearance on Meet the Press, Gates told Kristen Welker that A.I. is "certainly powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths." He repeated concerns about misuse, saying there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of ill intent and the latest A.I. tools.

Risks Implications And Policy Proposals

Gates urged concrete policy responses, including discussion of taxation and job protections, as A.I. threatens employment and economic stability. He suggested society consider taxing A.I. and robots and even protecting certain jobs from automation to blunt immediate labor market impacts.

The interview referenced other public warnings about extinction-level risks. As TMZ previously reported, former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon estimated a roughly 10 percent chance A.I. could wipe out humanity within the next decade if companies fail to control the technology. Gates did not adopt that precise figure but emphasized that the possibility of severe, wide-ranging harm merits political action now.

Gates also criticised relying on technology firms to police themselves and said lawmakers must weigh both security and economic consequences. He framed the coming decisions as urgent, telling Tapper that the clock is ticking and that leaders should convene to set rules and safeguards.
