Summary
  • John Ternus will become Apple CEO on September 1
  • Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and leads hardware engineering
  • Leadership reshuffle names Johny Srouji and Tom Merieb to new roles
  • Apple faces pressure from AI and semiconductor rivals as it pivots products

John Ternus has been named Apple’s next chief executive and will take over on September 1, with Tim Cook becoming executive chairman, the company said.

Ternus, 50, is a long time Apple insider who joined the company in 2001 and now serves as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, a role he took on after joining the executive team in 2021.

Within Apple he has led teams behind core products including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro, and he most recently presented the iPhone Air, described as the biggest iPhone revamp since 2017.

He has been credited with helping to revive Mac sales and expanding Apple’s product lineup across premium and more accessible models, shaping the company’s hardware strategy and tighter hardware software integration.

Before Apple, Ternus worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems and he holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

His public profile is minimal, with a sparse LinkedIn presence that lists two roles and education, and he keeps personal details private, including marital status and family background.

Challenges And Leadership Shift

Executives at Apple repositioned several senior roles as part of the transition, naming Johny Srouji chief hardware officer while Tom Merieb will lead the hardware engineering group Ternus previously managed.

The move signals a shift in leadership emphasis from Tim Cook’s operational and supply chain focus to a more product driven approach under Ternus, according to the coverage.

Apple faces growing pressure from rivals in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and semiconductors, with competitors like Nvidia and Meta cited as intensifying competition.

Ternus is expected to concentrate on integrating AI more deeply into devices, exploring new product categories such as foldables, smart glasses and AI driven wearables, and building on partnerships aimed at boosting Apple’s AI capabilities.

The change comes after a period in which Cook oversaw a large increase in Apple’s market value, reported at nearly $3.6 trillion, and it will test how quickly the company adapts to AI led industry shifts.

Tim Cook praised Ternus in a statement, saying John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor, and Ternus said he is profoundly grateful for the opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward.
