A james milby lottery win unfolded after a spontaneous stop for a Red Bull led to a $551,151 Fast Play jackpot, according to the Kentucky Lottery.
James Milby is a longtime truck driver from Glasgow, Kentucky, who said he bought a $20 Big Money Doubler! Fast Play ticket at the South Green Market while taking a break from yard work.
Milby told lottery officials he had played Scratch-off tickets for years but switched to Fast Play games about eight or nine months earlier after his grandson advised him to try them, the Kentucky Lottery said.
The grandson reportedly told Milby, "Papaw, it's just like a Scratch-off, only you don't scratch," as reported by the Kentucky Lottery. Using $30 in change, Milby purchased a single Fast Play ticket and scanned it at the store.
When Milby scanned the ticket he said he immediately suspected something was wrong, and a store employee confirmed the result, the Kentucky Lottery said. Milby rushed home to show his wife Tammy, whose own doubts led her to return to the store to verify the jackpot and to photograph the winning machine for proof.
Follow Up Plans And Prize Details
The prize combined the advertised $301,151 jackpot with a $250,000 bonus feature, giving a total payout of $551,151, the Kentucky Lottery said. That bonus feature win marked only the second time a Kentucky Lottery player has collected the additional Fast Play bonus.
Fast Play games provide instant cash prizes and a rolling jackpot that begins at $10,000, and the Big Money Doubler! Fast Play game's odds of winning the jackpot plus the bonus are one in 240,000, the Kentucky Lottery said. Players can win either a percentage of the jackpot or other instant prizes on each Fast Play ticket.
After taxes the Milbys said they took home just under $400,000. The couple told lottery officials they plan to invest the money, pay off bills and slow their pace of life, and Milby said he wants to improve his family's life and follow "whatever the good Lord puts on my heart to do," as reported by the Kentucky Lottery.
