Summary
  • Bethesda confirms The Elder Scrolls VI runs on Creation Engine 3
  • Matt Booty described seeing the game running in engine and doing well
  • Over 50 layoffs at Bethesda may delay release to at least 2028
  • Leaked FTC documents once suggested 2026 earliest launch but timing remains uncertain

Bethesda Game Studios has provided fresh signs of progress on The Elder Scrolls VI, though a firm release date remains elusive. Xbox content chief Matt Booty told Variety he has seen the game running in engine and described it as looking "amazing" and progressing well. Studio director Todd Howard told Kinda Funny Games on February 18, 2026 that the project is being developed as a "classic Bethesda" role playing game and confirmed it runs on Creation Engine 3. Bethesda said development passed a major internal milestone, but offered no public release window.

The title moved out of pre production in August 2023 after Starfield's development concluded, according to studio statements. Bethesda marked The Elder Scrolls series' 30th anniversary by saying early builds of the new game were already being played, as reported by the studio. The project first entered pre production following its June 2018 reveal at an E3 presentation. Bethesda has continued to describe the project as years away, while senior studio figures reiterated they want to reveal details only at the right moment.

Industry Consequences And Platform Questions

The development update comes alongside reports of workforce disruptions and shifting platform strategies. IGN and Eurogamer reported more than 50 job losses at Bethesda Game Studios during Xbox reorganizations in July 2026. Current and former staff told those outlets the layoffs harmed morale and could push the earliest realistic launch to 2028, while also raising concerns about increased crunch and loss of institutional talent. Internal documents leaked during regulatory submissions to the FTC previously indicated a 2026 earliest launch for Windows and Xbox console exclusivity, though Microsoft executives have said timing and platform details remained unsettled.

Xbox executives have acknowledged that Bethesda may have announced the game earlier than advisable. Matt Booty said showing projects too soon creates a difficult balance between exciting fans and timing reveals. Microsoft CEO level comments have also fuelled public speculation. In August 2026 an Xbox chief executive referred to the game by eight asterisks after viewing a live playthrough, a teaser the studio briefly echoed and that prompted fresh fan theories about the title and setting. Leaks and developer remarks have also fed speculation on a possible Hammerfell setting and Sentinel as a working title, though the studio has not confirmed any such details.
