Summary
  • Gui Santos ruled out with left knee tendinitis before game start
  • Yaxel Lendeborg active despite earlier left foot soreness
  • Warriors start Curry, Podziemski, Niang, Lendeborg and Draymond Green
  • Loss of Santos forces rotation changes and size matchup concerns

The Golden State Warriors lost a projected starter just before tipoff as Gui Santos was ruled out of the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center due to left knee tendinitis.

Santos was not listed on the injury report earlier, and his status changed on game day when the knee flared up, forcing a late adjustment to the Warriors rotation.

Yaxel Lendeborg, who had been listed as questionable with left foot soreness earlier on Wednesday, was cleared to play and entered the starting five for Golden State.

The Warriors opened with Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Georges Niang, Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green. Minnesota countered with LaMelo Ball, Ayo Dosunmu, Jaden McDaniels, Jonathan Kuminga and Rudy Gobert.

Santos and Lendeborg had started three of the team’s four games together at the forward spots and logged the bulk of those minutes. Without Santos, coach Steve Kerr faced immediate rotation decisions for forward minutes and lineup balance.

Implications For Rotation And Matchups

Golden State is likely to lean on Draymond Green for more minutes across multiple roles, including time at the forward position. Green previously played as a small-ball center against the Denver Nuggets and that approach yielded mixed success.

Kerr will need to pair Green with different frontcourt partners, including Al Horford, Graham Ike or Charles Bassey at times. Each pairing carries trade-offs, with Ike or Bassey reducing perimeter spacing and a Horford-Green frontcourt creating potential rebounding and interior scoring limitations.

The roster adjustment increases the likelihood of three-guard lineups. That shift may invite matchup problems against Minnesota when Jonathan Kuminga, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert occupy the floor together, a frontcourt group that presents more size than the adjusted Warriors front line.

Georges Niang’s promotion to the starting lineup suggests he will see his heaviest minutes of the season. Niang logged a season-high 23 minutes in a prior game against the Phoenix Suns, and the Warriors will rely on him for additional forward work in Santos’s absence.
