Summary
  • Raphinha suffered a confirmed hamstring injury and will return to Barcelona for treatment
  • Estimated recovery time is five weeks, ruling him out of key fixtures
  • Barça may claim about €144,000 under the FIFA protection scheme
  • Marcus Rashford is the likeliest short term replacement amid other options being considered

Barcelona enter a critical stretch with atlético madrid - barcelona looming, after Raphinha suffered a hamstring injury that forced him off before half time in Brazil’s friendly with France and did not return for the second half, a sequence that prompted immediate tests by the Brazilian Football Federation which confirmed another hamstring problem.

Club medical staff said the player will return to Barcelona to begin treatment and that the estimated recovery time is five weeks, a layoff that rules him out of a key league meeting at the Metropolitano and complicates Barcelona’s path in the Champions League quarter final against Atletico, a run the club described as potentially season defining.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta told Mon Esport it was "a real shame" and called for FIFA to review the international calendar, blaming the crowded schedule rather than players, while reports say the club may be eligible for about €144,000 under the FIFA Club Protection Programme, an amount Barcelona view as small compared with the prize money at stake should they falter in La Liga or Europe.

Raphinha’s absence removes a leading attacking figure who has started only 31 times this season because of recurrent hamstring issues yet still stands as the club’s second top scorer with 19 goals and eight created chances, and who finished last season as the Champions League joint top scorer with 13 goals, according to the club’s reporting.

His recent form included a hat trick in a 5-2 win over Sevilla and a two-goal, three-assist display in Barcelona’s 7-2 second leg demolition of Newcastle at Camp Nou, performances that underline his influence and explain why head coach Hansi Flick and teammates see him as a driving presence.

Replacement Options And Consequences

With Raphinha sidelined, Marcus Rashford is the obvious short term replacement and could strengthen his case to join permanently after a season-long loan, though reports say Barcelona are also exploring alternatives including Abde Ezzalzouli, Jan Virgili and Victor Munoz and considering more minutes for young winger Toni Fernandez.

The club still has attacking options in Ferran Torres, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, but Flick has warned previously that missing Raphinha was damaging because "he's the one who puts the pressure on" opponents, a role the player himself accepts when he admits he can be "a bit pushy" demanding more from teammates.

Former Barcelona forward Pau Victor said he had yet to contact Raphinha, adding that the player must be devastated, while the club fears the five week estimate could leave Raphinha unavailable for the Champions League semi finals if Barcelona progress, and possibly for a decisive Clasico, removing both a talisman and a dressing room leader who has often stood in as captain.
