The Detroit Lions traded david montgomery to the Houston Texans for two draft picks and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, a move that immediately altered their offseason roster calculus.
The addition of Scruggs initially puzzled observers because Detroit appeared set along its starting offensive line, but the team announced it had released veteran lineman Graham Glasgow several hours later, leaving the Lions without a clear starting center.
Scruggs arrives with mixed recent results, having recorded a 45.0 overall grade and allowed 11 pressures on 202 pass blocking snaps while with Houston, with a pass blocking grade of 57.7 and a run blocking grade of 40.5, per Pro Football Focus.
In Houston he started only one game while appearing in all 17, after making 13 starts in 2024, and his role has shifted across the interior line during his career.
When Scruggs played 568 snaps at center in 2024 he produced stronger marks, posting a 64.4 run blocking grade and a 62.1 pass blocking grade, was penalized six times, and allowed five sacks while surrendering pressures on 4.5 percent of opportunities, according to Pro Football Focus.
Glasgow Release Leaves Options Open And Decisions Ahead
Detroit had reportedly been expected to consider Glasgow a possible cap casualty, and his release now forces coach Dan Campbell and the front office to choose a path to fill the center void.
Glasgow posted a 61.3 pass blocking grade and a 54.3 run blocking grade, and he allowed pressures on 7.4 percent of opportunities, figures that factored into the team's decision.
The Lions now face several clear options, including signing a free agent such as Cade Mays, drafting a replacement, moving Tate Ratledge from right guard to center, or trying Juice Scruggs at the position.
Starting Scruggs at center is a contested idea because of his injury history and inconsistent play, yet his 2024 center snaps suggest Detroit may view him as a low-cost internal candidate worth exploring.
Campbell must settle the line configuration in coming weeks, and whatever choice the staff makes will shape the Lions offensive front heading into the 2026 season.
