Anne Hathaway has helped spotlight a subtle manicure trend as she appeared with a translucent, creamy nail finish on recent red carpet and industry stages. The look was created by celebrity nail technician Tom Bachik for a film premiere in California and resurfaced when Hathaway accepted a Disney Legends award.
The manicure featured short, rounded tips and a sheer yet creamy base that allowed the natural nail to peek through. At one appearance the finish looked glossy and slightly shimmery, creating what observers described as a sugar glass effect over the translucent color.
The style has been labeled coconut water nails to distinguish it from coconut milk nails. The difference lies in opacity. Coconut water nails blend a sheer and creamy base rather than a fuller opaque white, producing a light, hydrated appearance.
Jack Harper, a Mylee brand ambassador, said careful prep is essential because the sheer finish will not hide imperfections. He advised trimming cuticles and smoothing the nail surface, then applying a base coat and one or two thin layers of a translucent gel color to build just enough coverage. He added that a high gloss top coat completes the watery, light reflecting finish.

Shade choice matters for the intended natural look. Harper recommended delicate, barely there tones such as soft ivory, creamy beige, warm porcelain, sheer vanilla, pale almond and soft blush to achieve a clean, effortless result.
Daisy Kalnina, founder and CEO of The GelBottle Inc., emphasized the role of the right base to extend wear and protect nail health. She recommended products with added ingredients to boost strength for at home manicures and advised using builder in a bottle in salons to prevent chipping.
Kalnina also warned that summer conditions can undermine the style. Sun and pool water can strip moisture, leading to lifted gel edges and brittle nails. She recommended applying a high quality cuticle oil twice daily to maintain softness and hydration and to reduce lifting.
With natural nail health central to the look, the coconut water manicure markets itself as a minimalist, glossy option for late summer. The finish aims to make natural nails appear shinier and more hydrated rather than masking them.
