The plant genus Aster has undergone substantial taxonomic revision in recent decades. Its circumscription has been narrowed from nearly 600 species to roughly 170 species in current treatments. Most species now classed in Aster are native to Eurasia. Only Aster alpinus is listed as a natural member found across mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere and noted as the lone species native to North America in the strict sense. Many former New World asters were reclassified into related genera, for example Symphyotrichum, Eurybia and Doellingeria. The genus name comes from the Ancient Greek word for star, a reference to the flower head shape.

Garden Appeal Pollinator Value And Chemical Traits

Asters remain prominent in gardens and autumn displays. Garden retailers describe asters as emblematic of the fall season, praising their fringed flowers and ability to attract late season pollinators. Many cultivars and hybrids are popular for colour and extended bloom through Michaelmas. Some cultivars have received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

The plants support wildlife as food for the larvae of several Lepidoptera species. Aster species contain a range of phytochemicals. Flavonoids are common and are noted for antioxidant properties and petal colour. Terpenoids may underlie floral scent. Saponins can give antimicrobial potential by producing froth when agitated. Alkaloids appear less common and could be toxic if present. Phenolic compounds include tannins and other defense related substances.

Curatorial and cultural notes underline the genus role beyond gardens. National collections of asters are maintained at specialist growers and historic gardens. The flower also holds historical symbolism. For example, one political upheaval became known as the Aster Revolution because demonstrators wore the bloom as an emblem.
