Summary
  • tesla registrations across EU EFTA UK fell 17 percent per ACEA
  • BEV registrations rose 13.9 percent to 189,062 units in latest data
  • BYD surged 165 percent to 18,242 vehicles and holds 1.9 percent share
  • Ford is charging $495 for the Mustang Mach E frunk and faces customer pushback

tesla registered 8,075 vehicles across the EU, EFTA and UK, a 17 percent decline compared with the prior year, according to the latest ACEA data.

The same ACEA report shows battery electric vehicle registrations rose to 189,062 units, a 13.9 percent increase, lifting BEV share to 19.3 percent from a lower level a year earlier.

ACEA figures indicate that when Tesla is removed, BEV registrations across the region climbed 15.9 percent to 180,987 units versus 156,197, meaning Tesla weighed on overall growth.

BYD registered 18,242 vehicles in the region, a 165 percent surge year over year, giving the Chinese automaker a 1.9 percent market share versus Tesla at 0.8 percent.

In the EU alone Tesla recorded 7,187 registrations compared with 7,305 the prior year, a modest 1.6 percent decline, while the steeper fall for the combined EU, EFTA and UK figure was driven by EFTA markets.

Norway featured prominently, where total new car registrations plunged 76.3 percent after the end of tax exemptions, and Tesla’s historical dominance in that market amplified the regional decline.

Observers had blamed an earlier production changeover to the refreshed Model Y, referred to as Juniper, for previous weakness, and the company and its supporters cited that shift when European sales collapsed by roughly 37 percent earlier.

With the refreshed Model Y now in full production and widely available the production transition argument no longer explains the continued drop, and a boycott movement that gained momentum across Europe appeared to have reduced Tesla demand.

Market Shift And Ford Frunk Fee

The broader market is moving toward electrification, ACEA data shows, with petrol registrations down 28.2 percent and diesel down 22.3 percent, reducing the combined petrol and diesel share to 30.1 percent from a higher level a year earlier.

Plug in hybrids rose 32.2 percent to 99,654 units, led by Italy and Spain, while hybrid electric vehicles remained the most popular powertrain at 38.6 percent of the EU market.

Among manufacturers, Stellantis grew 6.7 percent to 164,436 units, with Fiat up 24.6 percent and Opel Vauxhall up 12.7 percent, while Volkswagen Group declined 3.8 percent yet held a 26.7 percent market share.

Separately, Ford now charges $495 for the Mustang Mach E frunk, a front trunk that measures about 4.7 to 4.8 cubic feet and roughly 9 inches deep, 26 inches wide and 14 inches high, according to the report.

Ford promoted the frunk as a tailgating convenience for food and drink, but some customers called the charge nickel and diming, saying the frunk is a basic EV expectation, and social posts flagged the decision.

The account also reports Ford has shuttered its initial Model e program, is moving into a more controlled effort, and has abandoned the F 150 Lightning in favor of a new pickup currently under design.
