Summary
  • National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Allegan, Otsego and Plainwell
  • Videos and photos showed heavy rain, rotation and power flashes reported to NWS
  • Over 40,000 Consumers Energy customers lost power according to a meteorologist post
  • Storm Prediction Center issued a Tornado Watch for Southeastern Michigan, forecasters warned

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Allegan, Otsego and Plainwell, the agency said, and social media showed stormy visuals and reports of ground circulation near Allegan. Local videos and a photo shared by News Channel 3 WWMT TV showed heavy rain, strong winds and power flashes.

Onlookers described an "uncondensed tornado south of Allegan" and posted timestamps of observed rotation and flashes, with one video reported to the National Weather Service. Residents in Paw Paw and near 109th east of Pullman posted clips and skyline photos from Bangor and other nearby towns as the storm passed.

Local broadcasters and reporters documented widespread outages along the warned cell path, and a WWMT reporter shared a map showing multiple outage clusters across Allegan and Barry counties. A meteorologist on Facebook said over 40,000 Consumers Energy customers were without power as of 12:20 Wednesday morning.

Another person on X reported 41,027 customers without power and noted three main outage areas, suggesting some outages may stem from thunderstorm winds rather than confirmed tornadoes. Officials and community pages urged residents to stay safe and check on neighbors while storm reports and damage assessments continued.

Regional Tornado Watch And Forecast

4Warn Weather said the Storm Prediction Center issued a Tornado Watch for all of Southeastern Michigan into the early morning, noting conditions were favorable for severe storms and tornado development across a broad area. Forecasters warned storms forming west of Metro Detroit could evolve into a damaging line.

The forecast update said the storms would move into Michigan and impact Metro Detroit later in the night, with threats of damaging wind, hail and tornadoes. Multiple tornado warnings and confirmed damage in Southeastern Wisconsin were cited as context for the incoming storms.

4Warn Weather explained a Tornado Watch means the atmosphere has the ingredients for tornadoes and that a warning means a tornado is happening or imminent. The bulletin advised that warnings are usually short, focus on specific communities, and require immediate sheltering in a basement or interior room of a sturdy building.

The update also noted that severe thunderstorm warnings can precede tornado warnings when a storm produces damaging winds or hail, and that meteorologists may issue a tornado warning if strong rotation is detected while a severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect.
