Northern Iowa announced that parker sutherland, an 18-year-old tight end, died Saturday morning, and the university did not disclose a cause of death.
Cedar Falls Fire and Rescue responded to a call at the university football complex on Thursday afternoon, and the call log recorded the reason as "unconscious/fainting (non trauma)," as reported by the school and local records.
UNI head coach Todd Stepsis said he was "heartbroken" and praised Sutherland's character and potential, saying the player embodied the qualities the program seeks in recruits.

Sutherland was a 6-foot-6 tight end who appeared in four games as a freshman for the Panthers in 2025 and was entering his sophomore season, according to university materials.
The university noted he played three sports at Iowa City High School and earned second-team All-State football honors in 2024, and he had been recognized with All-District and All-Conference selections.
Stepsis added that "Parker hits every quality and characteristic out of the park" in talent, character, attitude and toughness, and he emphasized the short but meaningful time Sutherland spent with the team.
UNI athletic director Megan Franklin said, "We are devastated, just devastated," and said the Panther family would support Sutherland's relatives and the athletics staff through the grieving process.
The university listed Sutherland's survivors as his parents, Adam and Jill Sutherland, and his sister, Georgia, and his biography mentioned interests including video games, movies, pickleball and Legos.
