Summary
  • GM will end Silverado medium duty production at Springfield plant in September 2026
  • International CV Series production will stop earlier on 10 September 2026
  • GM sold 1,273 Silverado MD trucks in Q1 2026, a 37.4% decline as reported by The Auto Wide
  • GM will shift to Isuzu based Chevrolet Low Cab Forward models for medium duty coverage

GM Ends Silverado HD Production will end later in 2026 after General Motors chose not to renew its long running manufacturing agreement with International Trucks, the company that assembled the Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD medium duty models.

Production of the Chevrolet medium duty line is scheduled to stop on 30 September 2026 at the Springfield, Ohio plant, and International Trucks' CV Series will end earlier on 10 September 2026 as part of the same wind down of the joint programmes.

The collaboration that produced both ranges began in 2015, and the Springfield facility has been heavily dependent on those programmes, the end of which follows the site's sale to Canadian defence contractor Roshel earlier in 2026.

Weakening sales in the medium duty segment contributed to GM's decision, as reported by The Auto Wide, with GM selling 1,273 Silverado medium duty trucks in the first quarter of 2026, a 37.4 percent decline versus the same period in 2025.

The Auto Wide also reported that Ford sold 2,331 F-650 and F-750 trucks over the same period, underscoring stronger rival performance in the Class 6 and Class 7 market and pressure on low volume commercial programmes.

Manufacturing Disruption And Commercial Lineup Shift

The ending of the production agreement will phase out both the Chevrolet Silverado medium duty models and International's CV Series, leaving the Springfield plant without its primary programmes and triggering broader supply chain disruption tied to medium duty manufacturing.

GM will retain a presence in the medium duty market through Chevrolet Low Cab Forward trucks built on Isuzu platforms, shifting away from in house medium duty development toward rebadged commercial vehicles, according to the company's announced strategy.

The Low Cab Forward range will include models based on Isuzu N Series and F Series derivatives, listed as LCF 3500, 4500, 5500, 6500XD and 7500XD, and will become GM's primary offering above standard pickups.

The Silverado medium duty models were purpose built for commercial use, featuring a 6.6 litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 with 350 horsepower and 750 pound feet of torque, paired with an Allison six speed automatic transmission, and multiple cab and drivetrain configurations.

Gross vehicle weight ratings varied across the Silverado MD lineup, with the 4500HD rated between 14,001 and 16,500 pounds, the 5500HD up to 19,500 pounds, and the 6500HD up to 23,500 pounds, depending on configuration.
