Jed York is the principal owner and chief executive officer of the San Francisco 49ers and a co-owner of Leeds United and Rangers.

He rose through the family business after a brief stint as a financial analyst at Guggenheim Partners and later served as director and vice president of strategic planning for the team.

York was named CEO in December 2008 as his parents, Denise DeBartolo York and John York, became co-chairs and continued to provide resources and represent the 49ers at league meetings.

In March 2024 York acquired enough of his mother’s shares to be named the franchise’s fifth principal owner, a move he described as intended to avoid future family conflicts over control while keeping ownership largely within the DeBartolo‑York family.

York has been a visible and sometimes polarizing figure. In October 2010 he told ESPN that the team would win its division, a statement that prompted criticism from media columnists.

On the field, the 49ers reached the NFC Championship Game in the 2011 season and went to Super Bowl XLVII after the 2012 season, achievements that coincided with the arrival and later departure of head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh’s exit in 2014 produced sharp internal scrutiny. York publicly framed organizational accountability, saying the franchise’s only goal is to win Super Bowls and inviting fans to hold him responsible when it failed to deliver.

Commentators in national outlets criticized York’s handling of the relationship between general manager and coach and cited a pattern of internal leaks during the period. He later replaced team leadership roles and in January 2017 hired John Lynch as general manager and Kyle Shanahan as head coach.

Those hires preceded a period of sustained success. In the first eight seasons after the appointments the 49ers reached four NFC Championship games and appeared in two Super Bowls.

Investments Personal Matters And Legal Issues

York also expanded the 49ers’ global footprint through 49ers Enterprises, which first took a minority stake in Leeds United in May 2018 and then purchased the remaining 56 percent from Andrea Radrizzani in July 2023.

49ers Enterprises acquired a majority interest in Rangers on May 30, 2025, further extending the organisation’s holdings in European football while the DeBartolo‑York family continued to control roughly 97 percent of the 49ers franchise.

Off the field York has held wider civic roles, including serving as chairman of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group board of directors since 2023, and he remains a prominent figure in Bay Area business circles.

Personal details in public records show he is the son of Denise and John York, the nephew of former 49ers owner Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., and that his brother Tony died in 2018.

York married Danielle and has two sons, and he filed for divorce in May 2026. He was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, on August 23, 2026, on suspicion of engaging in prostitution, a charge later reduced to disorderly conduct.

Reports state he pled no contest to the lesser charges and received a one day jail sentence, a $150 fine for disorderly conduct and a $1,000 fine for possessing criminal tools.
