Summary
  • Preorders sold out quickly with launch pickup inventory gone
  • Duo starts at $1,999 and reaches above $3,000 at 2TB
  • Analysts expect high demand but constrained initial supply
  • IDC and others foresee outsized revenue impact despite small unit share

Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, provoked a rapid preorder rush that left launch-day pickup inventory sold out and online delivery dates slipping into late January.

Apple described preorder demand as "nothing short of extraordinary" and said it was working to get the new product into customers' hands as quickly as possible.

The Duo starts at $1,999 and climbs above $3,000 at the 2TB storage tier, positioning it above the Pro and Pro Max in price and design.

Early sellouts came despite expectations that foldables remain a small share of volume, reflecting a concentrated but valuable customer response to a new premium form factor.

Demand Versus Supply And Strategic Implications

Analysts said Apple did not expect foldables to become mass market immediately, but it does expect outsized revenue from a small group of high-spending customers.

IDC's Nabila Popal said the appeal partly stems from Apple bringing a known form factor to its large iPhone base and called Duo "fast becoming an aspirational foldable."

Counterpoint Research's Tarun Pathak warned initial demand is likely to exceed supply, and the firm estimated roughly six million or fewer units could be available near term.

IDC also forecast supply constraints because of the device's complexity and Apple quality standards, while projecting roughly seven million Duo shipments this year, about 3% of Apple's total shipments in 2026.

IDC projected the foldable category would account for just over 2% of smartphone units this year but nearly 7% of industry revenue, and by 2030 it could represent 10% of smartphone revenue while remaining about 3% of units.

Analysts said the Duo can raise Apple's average selling price by converting Pro Max buyers and by attracting some Android foldable users, which JPMorgan said should disproportionately boost iPhone revenue.

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria said Apple needs the Duo to succeed amid tough earnings comparisons, warning that without Duo the company may face pedestrian revenue growth.

Other analysts noted the launch echoes previous Apple luxury moves, such as the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition and a long-running Hermès partnership, and appears aimed at creating exclusivity and a status halo.

Some firms monitoring the supply chain reported signs of shifting demand for other iPhone models, with Morgan Stanley noting early component order reductions for Pro variants although no confirmed cuts to finished production.

TechInsights' Wayne Lam described the Duo as aspirational and suggested the device could set the bar for premium iPhones while also risking longer upgrade cycles as prices rise.
