Dyson has entered oral care with a high-priced electric toothbrush that combines a built-in camera, artificial intelligence and a precision water jet to guide cleaning inside the mouth.
The device, marketed as the CameraJet, was developed by a team of 661 engineers over six years, Dyson said. The company placed a macro lens camera below the brush head with a reported resolution of 100,000 pixels. Live images stream to the MyDyson app and can be used for guided cleaning and coverage mapping.
Dyson describes an AI system called Gap Optical Targeting that analyses about 28 images per second to locate gaps between teeth. The company said the system acts within 100 milliseconds of gap detection to fire a burst of mouthrinse through a precision diaphragm pump. Dyson said the jet draws rinse from a 12.5 millilitre tank fitted with an anti-gravity style pressure chamber to maintain flow even when the brush tilts.
The brush head combines firmer interior bristles to lift stains with softer outer bristles for the gum line. It oscillates at nearly 1,000 times a second and carries an RFID tag to track brush-head replacement. The CameraJet offers multiple intensity settings, haptic pressure alerts, and a battery life the company estimates at seven to ten days.
Dyson promoted performance claims from lab testing that used a proxy plaque. One report cited the toothbrush removing up to 72 percent more plaque than leading electric competitors. Another account said Dyson found 69 percent more plaque removal from hard to reach areas compared with premium rivals.
Market Reaction And Product Ecosystem
Retail pricing varies by report with the UK launch noted at 420 pounds and other coverage listing a price of 499 dollars. Dyson will sell companion non-foaming toothpaste and a low-foaming mouthrinse intended to keep the lens clear. One report listed those products at 8.50 pounds each, while Dyson said no firm release date has been set.
Dyson framed the CameraJet as a category breakthrough, saying many smart toothbrushes so far focused on digital features rather than cleaning innovations. Niamh Turney, Dyson’s senior commercial manager, said the company aimed to change the fundamentals of oral care rather than add tracking statistics.
Dental professional voices cautioned that gadgets do not replace routine care. Eddie Crouch, chair of the British Dental Association, warned patients not to assume expensive devices substitute for a proper dental routine. Industry context in reports noted that smart brushes have struggled to win mainstream uptake despite features like timers and pressure sensors.
The CameraJet set includes a dock that refills the tank in seconds, a travel case and replacement brush heads in some bundles. Dyson stressed the camera only activates during live viewing or automatic jetting and said images are neither recorded on the device nor sent to the cloud.
