Summary
  • Tallahassee Red Lobster will close on May 24 after 56 years
  • Location opened in 1970 and was the chain's oldest continuously operating store
  • Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed roughly 130 restaurants
  • Company cited restructuring; CEO said the chain needed to get smaller

The red lobster tallahassee closure will take effect on Sunday, May 24, ending 56 years at the chain's oldest continuously operating restaurant.

The Tallahassee location first opened in 1970 and held a special place in Red Lobster history, the Tallahassee Democrat first reported.

Staff and regulars reacted with sadness as longtime employees prepared for the final service. Horace Williams, who worked more than four decades as head grillmaster, told the Democrat he often cooked more than 100 meals a day and took pride in the food.

Local management had urged support in recent months. General Manager Nicholas Southerland publicly encouraged diners to give the restaurant a chance, saying the location belonged to the community and he wanted to help bring it back to life.

Bankruptcy Aftermath And Broader Impact

Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed hundreds of underperforming restaurants during its restructuring, with one report saying the company rapidly closed around 130 locations nationwide.

Florida saw a wave of closures during that period, with 17 Red Lobster restaurants shutting down, though the Tallahassee store initially remained open after the first round of shutdowns.

Company leaders and spokespeople framed the wider changes as part of a restructuring effort. Red Lobster CEO Damola Adamolekun told the Wall Street Journal the chain "needed to get smaller" and was assessing restaurant rosters and lease terms. A Red Lobster spokesperson told TODAY.com the company continuously evaluates performance and lease terms and thanked guests and team members who supported the Tallahassee restaurant.

The chain's financial troubles were linked in reports to past promotions. One report said a $20 Endless Shrimp promotion in 2023 reportedly cost the company an estimated $19 million. After bankruptcy, the brand overhauled menus and leaned into self-aware marketing, including a SpendLESS Shrimp campaign and a limited menu tied to Flavor Flav's endorsement.

Concerns about shuttered Red Lobster properties have also surfaced in other communities. One former San Diego location remained vacant for nearly two years, with reports saying its lease runs until 2028 and nearby business owners calling the situation one of uncertainty and limbo.
