US Date Fruit Sales Growth accelerated in 2025, with sales rising 33 percent, Joolies California Superfruit told Food52, reflecting a wider shift away from ultra processed snacks.
Analysts expect further expansion, with Fortune Business Insights projecting the global date market to grow from $34.5 billion in 2026 to $55.58 billion by 2034 at a 6.1 percent annual rate.
Fortune Business Insights also appears in reporting that places the US market at $1.6 billion by 2034, while another report cited a $1.16 billion US projection by 2032.
Retail spikes have appeared abroad, with Medjool sales up 100 percent at Ocado in the UK, according to reporting in the Guardian.
Industry executives point to a mix of health trends and seasonal use that is lifting demand, and Natural Delights chief executive David Baxter told reporters that Ramadan remains the primary seasonal driver for date sales.
Baxter added that this season’s crop is about 20 to 30 percent smaller than last year’s but remains sufficient to meet growing US demand, the company said.
Social media has amplified the fruit’s profile, with viral recipes and first time taste videos highlighting dates as a natural sugar substitute, and nutrition outlets such as the Cleveland Clinic noting benefits for gut health, skin and brain function.
Registered dietitian Lisa Moskovitz, founder of the NY Nutrition Group, told Fox News Digital that dietitians have used dates to sweeten smoothies and lower sugar in desserts for years, while providing fiber, antioxidants, magnesium and potassium.
Implications For Supply And Consumption
Retailers and suppliers face an uneven seasonal picture as Ramadan and winter holidays concentrate demand, and Natural Delights is watching whether the two seasons overlap, which could extend peak sales periods.
Smaller crops and rising interest in specialty varietals are nudging suppliers to diversify, and Baxter said new cultivars from Saudi Arabia such as Sukkari, Khala, Khudri and Ajwa are entering the US market to broaden consumer choice.
Medjool remains the most popular US variety, with Deglet Noor second in use for cooking and baking, industry reporting shows.
Nutrition commentary includes both benefits and cautions, as Moskovitz warned that one average date contains about 15 grams of natural sugar, so pairing dates with nuts or seeds can help moderate blood glucose effects.
Separately, one report noted five dates provide roughly 30 grams of carbohydrates, making the fruit useful as pre workout fuel, and public health researchers at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health linked heavy ultra processed food consumption to higher dementia and cognitive impairment risks, underscoring one driver of the shift toward whole fruits like dates.
