Kyle Francis Kennedy, a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, died recently at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, her obituary said.
Burke Funeral Homes said she "passed away peacefully" and described her as "blessed with a formidable intellect, dry wit, and beauty." The Westwood town clerk, Dottie Powers, told reporters that an official cause of death remains pending.
Kennedy had lived with long-term paralysis and other medical challenges after a severe spinal cord injury in 2020, according to her obituary. The injury left her disabled and shaped the final years of her life.
She trained as an educator and built a career in early childhood education. Kennedy held a bachelor’s degree in history from Georgetown University and earned graduate degrees in early education from Pace University and in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as reported in her obituary.
Her obituary and news reports say she taught through Teach for America in New York City, worked with education technology companies to improve curricula, and coached teachers serving young students. She became an advocate for people with disabilities and testified at a hearing on discrimination in health care for the disabled at the Massachusetts State House.
Family Context And Reaction
Kennedy was the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford. Her father died when she was a child, a loss noted across published accounts of the family. She is survived by her sons, Conor and Declan, her mother, and siblings Michael Kennedy Jr. and Rory Gifford Kennedy, according to her obituary.
The obituary also recalled a daughter, Josephine, who died shortly after birth. Burke Funeral Homes said Kyle remained devoted to her children and that she fought to maintain her dry wit and determination through long medical struggles.
Kyle ran the Boston Marathon in driving rain and completed the race faster than her father, an achievement noted by family and local reports. In later years she cared for two Wheaten terriers and broadened her activism to highlight challenges faced by people with disabilities, as reported by multiple outlets.
Her death adds to a string of losses in the extended Kennedy family that media accounts have chronicled. News reports noted that another family member, Tatiana Schlossberg, had died the previous December after a battle with a rare blood cancer.
Funeral services were held privately, and news outlets cited the Burke Funeral Homes obituary for family statements and biographical details.
