Summary
  • Users reported missing direct messages and chat themes
  • Downdetector logged over 10,000 complaints during the outage
  • 71 percent of reports cited access problems with the platform
  • Study links over 30 minutes daily social media use to concentration decline

instagram down reports surged early on as users said direct messages vanished and chat themes disappeared from the platform.

Users posted complaints on Instagram's subreddit and other social sites saying they could not access DMs, use search, or see contacts.

Outage tracker Downdetector recorded more than 10,000 complaints about accessing the platform, with the volume peaking in the early morning.

Downdetector aggregates user submissions and cautions that the total does not represent the exact number of affected accounts.

Around 71 percent of the complaints concerned access problems, 19 percent pointed to server connection issues, and 5 percent involved the Feed or timeline.

Most reports came from the United States, where Downdetector registered over 10,000 submissions, while India showed about 100 and the UK about 170.

The tracker noted a spike peaking at approximately 9.11 am IST during the outage surge.

One user wrote, "Around two hours ago, my message page didn't show any messages at all, even though I have plenty, and I got two notifications earlier."

Another user posted, "My messages, my contacts on Instagram, I can't use the search tool or even scroll up! The whole thing is just broken right now."

Study Finds Attention Decline Linked To Social Media Use

A separate study of more than 8,000 children from around age 10 through 14 found those spending more than 30 minutes daily on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat likely experienced a gradual decline in concentration.

The study reported average daily time rising from about 30 minutes for nine-year-olds to roughly 2.5 hours for 13-year-olds, including social media, video watching and gaming.

The research described the change in attention as gradual rather than an immediate drop, noting longer daily usage correlated with the observed decline.
