A flash flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill and remains in effect until 1215 AM CDT for Atchison County, northwestern Holt County and northwestern Nodaway County, the agency said.

According to the warning, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area at 613 PM CDT, with between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain already reported, and additional amounts of 0.5 to 2 inches possible.

The warning said flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, and that radar indicated the storms were the source of the heavy precipitation.

Officials warned the hazard could produce rapid rises on small creeks and streams, impact urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, and affect other poor drainage and low lying areas in the counties covered by the warning.

Precautions Impact And Local Guidance

The warning listed specific communities that may experience flash flooding, naming Tarkio, Rock Port, Fairfax, Craig, Elmo, Westboro, Watson, Corning and Phelps City as places of concern within the warned area.

As reported by the agency, motorists should follow the advice to turn around and not drown when encountering flooded roads, because most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

The warning identified the hazard source as radar indicated thunderstorms and emphasized immediate risk to low lying roads and drainage sites in the region.
