Summary
  • Three people found dead at the Islamic Center of San Diego
  • Mother reported a missing son with firearms and vehicle to police
  • Two suspected shooters later found dead in a car from gunshots
  • Investigators serving search warrants and following leads, Wahl said

Police responded to a san diego shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego after reports of an active shooter, officials said.

San Diego police said they received their first call around 9:42 a.m. from the mother of one of the suspects, who reported her son missing along with her firearms and her car, Wahl told reporters.

The mother told officers her son was suicidal and likely in the company of a friend, and she said both young men were wearing camouflaged clothing, Wahl said.

Investigators made a connection between one of the suspects and Madison High School, which is about a mile from the Islamic Center, Wahl said.

At 11:43 a.m. police received reports of an active shooter at the mosque, Wahl said, and officers who had been in the area talking with the mother immediately dispatched themselves to the Islamic Center.

When officers arrived they found three victims already dead, and while searching the building dispatchers received calls that a landscaper may have been shot a few blocks away, Wahl said.

Shortly after that, police received another report that the two suspects were dead in a car from gunshot wounds, and investigators began serving search warrants, Wahl said.

Wahl told reporters investigators would continue following any leads and any information that comes forward as they focus on determining how the incident happened and what could have been done to prevent it.

Investigation And Immediate Response

Police said investigators are serving search warrants and pursuing leads to piece together a timeline and the suspects' movements before the attack, Wahl said.

Officers in the area had been attempting to identify likely locations for the missing young men when the active shooter call came in, and those officers moved quickly to the mosque when they heard the reports, Wahl said.

Officials described the response sequence as including the initial missing person report, the mosque shooting report, separate reports of a possible shooting of a landscaper, and the later report that both suspects were found dead in a vehicle, Wahl said.
