Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, at a Cupertino presentation where CEO John Ternus introduced the device as a new iPhone form factor. Apple described the Duo as offering the largest display ever on an iPhone while still fitting easily in a pocket.
The Duo opens like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone Pro Max. A 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display covers about 90 percent of the surface area of iPhone 18 Pro, and both screens share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally.
Apple emphasized materials and durability. The body uses Grade 5 titanium and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front with a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and minimize crease visibility. The hinge contains more than 100 components, support ribs, and a 3D-printed hinge cover, and Apple said custom adhesives and layered glass relieve bend stress.
The device packs two batteries that operate as one, and Apple estimated video playback up to 31 hours on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, and 24 hours when both screens are used equally. Touch ID returns as a side-button authentication method.
Apple said the iPhone Duo runs on A20 Pro, the same chip family used in iPhone 18 Pro models. The company described a package connecting A20 Pro to a custom vapor chamber for improved thermal management and said the chip delivers faster sustained performance, increased memory bandwidth, and larger neural engine capacity for on-device AI.
The camera system centers on a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 2x optical-quality Telephoto and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and Apple said the folding form factor enables new features. Duo Preview lets subjects frame shots on the outer display, Smart Take uses on-device AI to capture posed moments, and Kid Cue plays animations to attract children’s attention.
Availability Impact And Market Context
Apple set a starting price of $1,999 and will offer the Duo in 256GB through 2TB capacities and two finishes, star white and night sky. Apple also introduced matching accessories, including a folio with an integrated kickstand and a thin two-part protective case, and listed pricing for those items.
The company will sell the phone in dozens of countries, with preorders scheduled to begin in October and availability following later that month, Apple said. The device uses an eSIM-only design and includes wireless upgrades such as Wi‑Fi 7 support via an Apple-designed N1 chip and a next-generation C2 cellular system that supports mmWave in the U.S.
Apple framed the Duo as a reimagined iOS experience. iOS 27 adapts home screens, adds split-view multitasking, StandBy enhancements, and new APIs for developers. Apple also highlighted Apple Intelligence and a new version of Siri, which it said will bring more personal and conversational AI capabilities to the larger display.
Industry context in the report noted Samsung has led the foldable market since 2019, and that foldable shipments totaled 19.6 million units in 2025. The launch comes amid early foldable offerings from other manufacturers and lingering consumer durability questions, which Apple sought to address through its materials and hinge engineering. Wall Street reaction appeared muted, with Apple shares trading lower during the announcement, according to the coverage.
