Spotify down left tens of thousands of users unable to stream or log in as outage reports surged on Downdetector, Reuters reported.
The disruption began with small report spikes then grew rapidly, Reuters said, with user filings first appearing around 9:30 AM Pacific and a sharp surge near 10:20 AM Pacific.
Downdetector counts passed 15,415 reports at one point, Reuters wrote, and earlier peaks exceeded 13,418 reports during the morning.
Users across mobile apps, desktop clients, and the web player reported failures, Reuters said, with common errors including playback stalls, login failures, and a page error that read "This page got tripped up. There was an error and we couldn't load the page."
Reuters noted that the outage appeared global, with hotspots in major US cities and reports from Colombia, Spain, and North Macedonia.
The pattern of cross‑platform, cross‑region failures led Reuters to describe the incident as likely server‑side, citing possible problems in authentication services, content delivery, or backend routing.
Spotify acknowledged the issue on X, posting "We're aware of some issues right now with the app and are checking them out" before Downdetector totals peaked, Reuters reported.
Reports and eyewitness accounts also appeared in reporting by Refresh, which tracked the surge on Downdetector and described user experiences from both the US and UK.
Recovery Efforts And User Impact
Refresh said reports climbed to more than 14,000 at one point and later began to fall, though users continued to see intermittent problems during recovery.
Refresh quoted technology writers who experienced limited service, saying mobile playback was often more reliable while the web player struggled to display content or process searches.
The site noted that users with downloaded playlists could still play offline content, and that some people saw partial restoration before services fully recovered.
Downdetector report counts fell sharply during the afternoon, Refresh reported, with US reports dropping to the hundreds and UK reports following the same trend.
Several hours after the first acknowledgement, Spotify posted on X "All clear now - thanks for your patience with this" and directed users to its community and support pages, Refresh reported.
Neither Reuters nor Refresh reported a technical explanation from Spotify, and Reuters recalled that past outages have sometimes resolved in two to four hours but can last longer when core infrastructure is affected.
Both outlets advised users to monitor Downdetector and the Spotify Status account on X for live updates while the company investigates any remaining issues.
